THE ATELIER · THE VOICE
Niander Wallace
Niander Wallace has spent thirty years taking pleasure seriously. Not as a subject — as a practice. It began with a single-use camera and the discovery that a picture you cannot repeat asks for more nerve than a hundred you can delete.
It went on through nights that happened somewhere other than a bed: on car parks, in lakes, on rooftops, in taxis, in a hotel where no one said their name; through rooms where many people had said yes beforehand; through blacklight and paint on skin, through rope, through the art of making someone wait long enough.
What he learned fits in one sentence: the exciting thing is never the act. It is the other person — and the frame that makes them safe enough to show themselves. Everything Maison Taut publishes follows that sentence.
The name is chosen. The voice is his own. The face is withheld — not modesty, method: the work is about whoever is in the room, and a face would only get in the way.
He works at night, in Germany, in two languages. He reads correspondence himself and answers slowly. He does not explain a refusal. Public plates hang on the threshold; further nocturnes are spoken behind the door.
