NIANDER, LIVE

Niander,
live

The nocturnes are read once and never change. This is the other direction: the voice answers.

Two ways in. Written, at whatever hour you are awake. Or spoken, if you would rather be talked to than read to.

The first minutes are open. After that the house counts in jetons.

  1. WRITTEN

    Die Korrespondenz

The first ten minutes of every night are open. Thereafter one jeton a minute. He writes as he speaks — second person, present tense, no hurry. He remembers the last time. He stops on one word.

  2. SPOKEN

    Der Anruf

Two minutes are open, which is enough to know whether you want the rest. Thereafter five jetons a minute. His voice, on your telephone, at the hour you name. Nothing is recorded on either side.

JETONS

One jeton is one euro. They are bought in cassettes of twenty, fifty or a hundred and they do not expire. The larger cassette costs no less per jeton, and never will — scarcity here comes from the hour, not from a timer.

PLAINLY

The voice is a clone of Niander's own, and the sentences are written by a machine that has been taught his register. Nobody is sitting in a room waiting for your call.

This is said here and not in a footnote, because the piece only works if you know it. Whoever believes there is a person on the line will be disappointed. Whoever knows there is not tends to listen better.

Nothing is kept beyond the conversation itself: no transcripts after the night, no recordings, no name attached to a number. You end it with one word, and it ends.

STATUS

The line is being built. The door takes names now, in the order they arrive, and the first correspondents are called before it opens to the threshold.

For adults. Spoken and written in German. Personal use only — no recording, no forwarding.
