Nocturnes

A nocturne is a spoken piece for the hour after midnight. Ten minutes. One voice. Second person. Explicit where it needs to be, and never louder than that.

They are written for one listener and read once, by Niander, in German. Each begins with a rule and keeps it.

N° 01 is open. Further nocturnes are spoken behind the door.

  1. N° 01

    Die Tür

A voice enters a dark room a little after two. It asks for nothing except breath, sets one rule, and keeps it. Ten minutes in the second person, spoken in German — slow, explicit where it must be, and quiet at the end.

  2. N° 05

A car pulls off the motorway into the rain. Three people, one arrangement made earlier in the evening, one back seat. A duet — his voice and hers — with you in the middle.

  3. N° 10

A length of black silk over your eyes, and one rule: what you cannot see, you hear twice. Slow, close-miked, and patient to the point of cruelty.

  4. N° 31

Midsummer, a sauna at the end of a jetty, a lake that holds the light. In the north in June there is no last train and no morning to end it — only this, for as long as you want it.

  5. N° ·

More nocturnes are in preparation, spoken behind the door. Thirty-two are written.

    IN PREPARATION BEHIND THE DOOR
